‘Roots and Branches’ at the Forge

Furniture designer and artist Tim Patterson begins his month-long residency at the Allendale Forge Gallery on Friday 1st September, with his first solo exhibition of timber-based objects.

Tim Patterson, from Haltwhistle, is a member of the Brampton Woodworkers’ Club in Cumbria, where he handcrafts pieces of unusual beauty using modest materials. ‘Roots and Branches’ is the culmination of his fascination with everyday objects, and their powerful connection to memories, experiences, and our sense of personal identity.

He explained: “My first real contact with the making process came when I was twelve. I went to school in Oxfordshire in the 1960s – just your standard secondary college, but there were a handful of inspiring teachers who were exploring art, technical drawing, woodwork and metalwork. They really opened my eyes to the idea of a multi-disciplinary approach to imagining and creating, and their formative effect can be seen in the aesthetics of my work today, which tests engineered materials such as plywood and OSB (Oriented Strand Board)”.

Tim attended the furniture production course at Rycotewood College, Thame, Oxfordshire and then went on to graduate with a BA (Hons) in 3-D design (Furniture) from Norman Potter’s innovative “Construction” course at the West of England College of Art in Bristol.

‘Roots and Branches’ began life eighteen months ago as a personal project, but as it grew it became a collaboration between other disciplines – including the photographer Marj Baillie who captures the narrative of his work in striking images.

Tim’s exhibition illustrates his ongoing interest in design and the ways we interact with the objects we choose to surround ourselves with. He added: “When I’m in the workshop, it’s like having a conversation with myself, the materials and the tools.” Walking around the space, you’re invited to interact with Tim’s thought-provoking creations. Significant objects are transformed when placed on pedestals. Tables have potential to become a forum for meeting, creativity and resolving conflict. As Tim says, “It’s all about investigating the properties and potential of the materials.”

‘Roots and Branches’ at the Allendale Forge Gallery continues until September 30th and

admission is free. Visit: www.allendaleforgestudios.co.uk
