Penelope Stripes Clothing Company is a NEW START UP business in Allendale
Rebecca Losh started The Penelope Stripes Clothing Company in the West of Ireland after leaving Galway technical institute however the Allendale Forge Studios is Rebecca’s first inhouse work unit. Rebecca was inspired by a desire to offer an alternative to the throw-away culture put forward by cheap high street clothing stores and quick seasonal turn-around fashion trends.
“I began trawling 2nd hand shops and accepting bags of pre-loved clothes from my friends and set about upcycling them. Upcycling clothing is a creative, almost zero energy way in which to re-use unwanted items and turn them into a “most-favourite-never-take-off” jumper/skirt/dress. I give garments a new lease of life and find an outlet for them through craft markets, music festivals and now through my shop/studio at The Allendale Forge Studios.”
While living in the West of Ireland, Rebecca developed her skills by completing a course at Galway Technical Institute learning the arts of pattern drafting and garment construction. This enabled her to bring her own ideas that were itching to be made by her fingers into reality and she discovered just how much she also enjoyed transforming a flat, square piece of fabric into a wearable design entirely of her own conception.
Rebecca is a maker of original clothes with personality and a little bit of sparkle. She has moved back to Northumberland after 13 years away, working from a light filled studio here at The Forge. She is happy transforming your favourite old jacket you can’t bear to send to the charity shop into something else you will continue to love. Or, she can create a unique garment or you can simply browse through her hand-made designs in her studio/shop.
