Artists/ Designer Makers

Paul Armstrong - Watercolours/ Oils/Acrylics/Pastels
I am a Northumberland based artist with a passion for capturing the beauty of nature and the amazing diversity of colour and light effects it produces. I aim to create paintings with a sense of drama drawing you into the scene to escape for a while.
My passion for outdoor activities gives me an opportunity to observe my subject matter at close quarters. My surfing, climbing, cycling and running sessions always end with me making field sketches to turn into finished work back in the studio.

Sarah Blackett-Ord - Watercolours
“My art work features plant and flower studies, architectural features, buildings and still lifes. Although I paint when I travel, most of my subjects are local, from Whitfield, situated in the West Allen Valley. I try to capture the changing seasons in the North Pennines, Northumberland by painting and drawing plants- spring bulbs, the first bright green leaves on an early perennial and the blue of an early summer on an eryngium.
When I paint interiors and still lifes I like the sharp light of a frosty morning on a shutter or the hazy summer evening sun with traces of yellow heat in the reflections. On my travels I have painted a wide range of subjects such as interiors of cathedrals in Italy, a Burmese teak monastry, an Italian street scene and Mediterranean plants from an Italian garden.”
Jules Cadie - Artist and Blogger
Jules Cadie combines cultural development with his own practice as a visual artist. He participates in cultural projects and festivals, art fairs and open studio events. Living high in the North Pennines , his work explores the relationship between development, creativity and the natural environment. It is concerned with celebrating the margins and interface where nature and culture collide.
Apart from two-dimensional and material work, his investigations include sculpture, installations, digital imagery, exchange events and blogging.

Glynnis Carter - Painter/mixed media
Originally from London, Lynnis lived, studied and worked in the North East from 1967 – 2000.
Her paintings are a respond to rather than a representation of, landscape. Inspired by the colour and structure of rock formations, hills and moorland, constantly changing light and weather conditions, her work has developed from an experimental appoach to making paintings.

“I am an artist with many years of experience of exhibiting in public and private galleries both in the UK and in France, with several awards. My work has also been featured on regional and national television.
Observation is the key to my approach. I would like to think that the quality of my observation allows me to explore different areas of subject-matter, whether a small landscape, an intensely studied life drawing, or the more widely known dramatic compositions based on movement and horses, in an informed and investigative way.”

Rosie Villiers-Stuart - Watercolours, acrylics, printmaking
I am a landscape and wildlife painter, living and working in the West Allen Valley exhibiting widely in England and Scotland.
Working mostly in watercolour, my inspiration is the landscape and wildlife around my home – bare hills, lush valleys and summer hay meadows. Working outside in all weathers I often finish paintings on the spot, sometimes take sketches back to my studio where I distil, elaborate or transform them into finished paintings and prints. I also teach watercolour courses here at the Forge studios and at the Burnlaw Centre.
