Sarah Blackett Ord Monday April 2nd – Friday April 30th 2012 Sarah Blackett Ord combines a busy rural community and family life with painting in watercolour and drawing. This exhibition will focus on the flowers, buildings and animals, which surround her remote Northumbrian home on the Whitfield Estate, although some subject matter may be from further afield. She has a beautiful studio in the grounds of her home, which overlooks the West Allen Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Her preferred medium is watercolour but she also paints in oils and has included one or two pencil drawings in her exhibition. Come to the public preview on the first Saturday of the month (April 7th) and have a glass of wine and chocolates in the gallery. Sarah will be in attendance between 11 and 1pm if you want to meet her and talk to her about her work. Thereafter, she will be at Allendale Forge Studios every Saturday through out April on the following dates at the following times to chat to interested visitors about her work: April 14th | 12-2pm April 21st | 1-3pm April 28th | 2-4pm.
An exhibition by Pete Graham, stonemason, sculptor and printmaker March 3rd – March 31st The art of carving has a long and distinguished history but its practitioners are now few and far between. North East sculptor Pete Graham is doubly unusual because he works in both stone and wood. Pete is exhibiting a selection of recent works in the gallery here at the Allendale Forge Studios during the month of March 2012. Visitors can enjoy a range of works from contemporary, organic forms to intricate historic carvings. Pete studied Architectural Stone Carving at the City and Guilds of London School of Art, and his knowledge of classical architecture and lettering is reflected in several pieces. One of his best known works is a large dragon’s head inspired by the four massive stone heads that stand guard outside the National Trust’s Wallington Hall near Morpeth. Pete is accomplished at working in two as well as three dimensions – he is also showing drawings and etchings that reflect the design process involved in creating a complex sculpture. Pete is running a series of carving courses at the Forge Studios this spring. He has added a third to his original two due to [...]

During the evening he’ll talk about his wildlife photography and experiences so far, including how he got the shots and a bit about the wildlife itself. His images will be projected by an HD projector throughout the evening. There will be a raffle at the event as well with some great prizes, including a print of one of his photographs. The event will be raising money for his Borneo expedition again where he will be working with the Kelabit tribe of Sarawak. This will include building a museum and establishing trekking routes to help further the ecotourism of the area. As well as this, he’ll be trekking through the jungle and gaining valuable experience for his future aspirations. Doors will open at 6.30pm, and the talk will begin at 7.00pm. Tickets are £7.50 each and refreshments will be available, including a complimentary glass of wine. If you would like to book tickets, [...]

Will Nicholls wins not one but two awards in the RSPCA’s Young Photographers Competition 2011. Allendale Forge Studios wants to congratulate our youngest member, Will Nicholls, who scooped The RSPCA’s Best Young Photographer Award in the 16-18 year old category as well as overall winner. We’re really proud of Will whose work speaks for itself. The awards are so well deserved. Will joined us at the age of 13 as part of our Youth Project where we encourage young people to make and create things to sell in the youth gallery. Will came with his photography and we displayed and sold it for him at no cost to him. Pretty soon Will had a following and he used the money from his sales to buy bigger and better cameras but also Willl took the time to chat with the customers and ask questions of the other cooperative members. Now, at the age of 16, Will is a full member and resident artist at Allendale Forge Studios with his own selling space and he can be found in the Forge Gift Shop two days a month helping to run it. Will also held a very successful exhibition in October 2011 which [...]

A WHOLE LOT OF SKY December 1st – January 31st 2012 An exhibition of landscape paintings by Ian & Claire McMean “Walking along Hadrian’s Wall on a crisp sunny autumn morning, enjoying the crystal clear clarity of the air, looking across countless miles of fields and hills in all directions, one becomes aware of the sky above and even below.” “In Northumbria there is “a whole lot of sky”, the most panoramic skies to be seen on the planet are on Hadrian’s Wall or the Northumberland coast. You feel you could be in a bubble floating on the breeze or in a hot air balloon surveying the earth, not on the earth looking up.” Ian and Claire McMean are inspired by the big skies of Northumberland and the drama the skies bring to the landscape. They are highly accomplished painters, illustrators, designers and sculptors with international reputations. Their work is held in collections across the world from Bejing to Toronto, Cape Town to Newcastle and beyond. They “have brushes and like to travel”.
