Will Nicholls wins not one but two awards in the RSPCA’s Young Photographers Competition 2011. Allendale Forge Studios wants to congratulate our youngest member, Will Nicholls, who scooped The RSPCA’s Best Young Photographer Award in the 16-18 year old category as well as overall winner. We’re really proud of Will whose work speaks for itself. The awards are so well deserved. Will joined us at the age of 13 as part of our Youth Project where we encourage young people to make and create things to sell in the youth gallery. Will came with his photography and we displayed and sold it for him at no cost to him. Pretty soon Will had a following and he used the money from his sales to buy bigger and better cameras but also Willl took the time to chat with the customers and ask questions of the other cooperative members. Now, at the age of 16, Will is a full member and resident artist at Allendale Forge Studios with his own selling space and he can be found in the Forge Gift Shop two days a month helping to run it. Will also held a very successful exhibition in October 2011 which [...]

A WHOLE LOT OF SKY December 1st – January 31st 2012 An exhibition of landscape paintings by Ian & Claire McMean “Walking along Hadrian’s Wall on a crisp sunny autumn morning, enjoying the crystal clear clarity of the air, looking across countless miles of fields and hills in all directions, one becomes aware of the sky above and even below.” “In Northumbria there is “a whole lot of sky”, the most panoramic skies to be seen on the planet are on Hadrian’s Wall or the Northumberland coast. You feel you could be in a bubble floating on the breeze or in a hot air balloon surveying the earth, not on the earth looking up.” Ian and Claire McMean are inspired by the big skies of Northumberland and the drama the skies bring to the landscape. They are highly accomplished painters, illustrators, designers and sculptors with international reputations. Their work is held in collections across the world from Bejing to Toronto, Cape Town to Newcastle and beyond. They “have brushes and like to travel”.

Allendale Forge Studios won the Women Into the Network (WIN) Best Rural Business Award In harsh economic times we were absolutely over the moon to receive the recognition this award gives us for all the hard work Amanda Galbraith and her team have put in to make this centre a reality. ABOUT THE AWARD Working within a remote rural area businesses face physical and social isolation and a lack of rural business support. Small businesses are fighting off stiff competition as they attempt to develop a thriving rural enterprise. The winner of the WIN Best Rural Business Award needs to show great determination and strength in creating and/or developing a successful rural enterprise, overcoming significant barriers and creating sustainable local employment – a key player in rural re-generation in the North East. WHY WE WON Managing director, Amanda Galbraith and her team, clearly demonstrated all of these things with Amanda as the driving force behind the scenes. We won this award for setting up and raising funds to make the Art & Media Centre a reality, creating an accessible retail outlet for over 20 small rural businesses that are based within The Forge and a further 60-70 satellite micro-businesses in the [...]

Carol Nunan’s Original Prints This November sees printmaker, Carol Nunan, holding her first ever solo exhibition at The Allendale Forge Studios Gallery. Carol began making floral monotypes over a year ago when she was still a partner in Horsley Printmakers. A change in circumstances provided Carol with a fantastic opportunity to branch out on her own when she was offered the chance to have a studio at The Forge. Carol, who is also the Forge’s art project and marketing manager, is in the process of setting up Studio 11 as the creative workshop hub of Allendale Forge Studios. When she is not using the studio as her own exclusive space for making and developing her floral monotypes during two days in the week she is busy coordinating other artists who teach their own particular creative discipline. You can see Carol’s new work from November 1st-30th 2011 alongside her greetings cards, handmade note books made from old prints and book marks from print off cuts.

We have begun a collection from the village to give to the Children in Need team on the day so we hope you will help us support this worthy charity and make a donation. We collected £260 through the Cafe and around Allendale Village and Anna Thompson of Hedz Natural Beauty here at the Forge donated a further £150 – her entire previous day’s takings – making the total raised £410.
for Will Nicholls Will Nicholls wildlife talk about his photography on Friday, October 21st was an absolute roaring success. The tickets were completely sold out several days beforehand. Given that Will is just 16 years old he deserves a big round of applause from all of us at Allendale Forge Studios. Here is his feedback from the night: “I am delighted that so many people came to see my wildlife photography talk on October 21st. It was a great experience for me. The comments I received afterwards were very encouraging! It was good to be able to talk to a crowd of people, something that I Hope to be doing for a long time in the future when working in TV. As the talk was a sell out, I hope to do similar events in the near future. I met many photographers and got some great photography tips and ideas that I’ll be trying out soon, such as using remote release cameras to get a really up-close type of shot. The money raised will all be going towards my month long Borneo expedition next year where I will be taking part in a conservation project to build a much needed [...]
